Also, I had a similar trash problem in Snow Leopard 10.6.8 the other day resulting from a software update, after that deleted files didn't show up in the trash. The fix for that was to reset Access Control Lists (ACLs) for home folder using Snow Leopard install disk inserted, shut down, startup holding c key, at language dialog go to menu and reset ACLs. The problem in Lion is possibly related to that.
