It definitely was individual books that were the issue--I've since found more that won't load. I now do them in batches to avoid the problem.

Dave, I didn't keep track of all the ones that were a problem, but I do know "The Wendigo" by Algernon Blackwood was the first one that seemed to be causing all the problems I experienced at the beginning. When I went through the list of books I initially downloaded, that was the first book I came across that wouldn't show up on the device.
