Just as a point of interest, my wife was having frequent problems with the Kobo's memory becoming corrupted, and it turns out the problem was that she had multiple programs open at the same time when accessing her Kobo from her computer. Specifically, she had Kobo Desktop and Adobe Digital Editions open when transferring books. This would reliably corrupt the main memory (even after ejecting the device from the Window's task bar) and force her to perform a factory reset to fix it. Once we discovered the source of the problem, she is careful to only have one program open at a time and to disconnect the Kobo and let it update between programs (as opposed to simply closing one program and then immediately opening another with the Kobo connected). She hasn't had any problems since.
