It charges itself every time the light is switched on. This is the only type of smoke detector I have in my house now. I only have to warn guests not to flip the light switch on/off quickly as that is how you test it is working!

ETA: bayonet fitting is also available.
Now that's cool! Never seen those before - going to have a look as I'm just off to the DIY store to get me a strimmer. K for that
