Felicity has two that she uses. One is the sort you buy in the shops, like this. She sleeps all over this, climbs and plays on it all the time, but never really scratches it. Expensive, but she loves it. Of course she'd probably be just as happy with a cardboard box... The uprights are wrapped with rope and the rest covered in carpet.

And the other is a 6" diameter tree branch, about 8 feet long that leans against a corner of the room. I wrapped it in 1/2" hemp rope. Climbs this all the time too, but this is the only one she actually scratches and it just gets fuzzier and fuzzier as the years go by. She's had it for 7 years now, and it should be good for another 57 years at least! Cost... about $3 for rope, and 30 minutes of time. I painted a layer of latex glue onto the branch before wrapping the rope, so no matter what it will never come loose.
