At least they do let you choose, book by book, whether or not to download a book onto your device when you are starting from scratch. That was (IMO) a huge step forward.

You can remove all the books from "I'm Reading" on the website, then bookmark the ones you want to sync from your "Purchased List" and it will only sync those. Just write down your page number for the book(s) you have open.

We have two readers--one WiFi and one Touch--at our house. At this point, neither of us have the whole meal deal on our readers. We have backups of everything, but keep only what we are reading and our purchased, but not yet read, books on the reader itself.
