I think it's an optical illusion that makes it better with a dark edge around the screen. I noticed the same when comparing a silver Sony to my hot pink. The hot pink is not only prettier, but also gives the illusion of more contrast. The classic Nook's bezel is white as well, but has a thin black edge around the screen, and I think that is what makes it so pleasing for the eye to read.
