I get the group distaste for drive-by "check out my book" authors. I feel similarly.
But I imagine a larger issue is how e-readers are still a premium luxury item. It still costs >$100 for a dedicated E-ink device that THEN costs about the same as paper books to read typical current e-books. Maybe I'm wrong. Any netbook costs more than that but PC's/laptops have multiple uses and have greater utility to more people.
