Brick by brick world-building - yup, a good description. But sometimes he has to tell us how to make the bricks, too. My daughter gave me the trilogy for Father's Day, and I finally finished it last night. The third one was the hardest slog. I can't tell you how many other books I also read in the past month, but short stories are looking pretty good right now.

Oh, I did read Sawyer's 'Wonder' in five hours straight through when I should've been sleeping. I guess I'm an action book kind of guy.
