What do you do with large graphics that are getting resized?

I'm converting word > html > epub (using sigil) and then to mobi (using calibre). When I display the mobi file on a kindle, the large graphics (originally landscaped in the Word file) are resized to fit a kindle screen and as such, they become unreadable. (The graphics display fine on an ipad with a double-tap.)

I've tried including the figure (with its tiny text and graphics elements) and below it, pointing to the .jpg file; however, the .jpg file that launches in the kindle's browser is also resized. Should I pull the graphic into a dedicated pdf file, convert it to azw, and then point to that file from within the document?

There must be a way to handle big graphics so that they are somewhat readable on a kindle. Am I missing a setting in sigil or calibre? Is it the way I've saved the .jpg?

This is probably a sticky somewhere, but I couldn't find it.
