I do not have the 903 with me at the moment, and I am not a great user of audiobooks, but I did play around with it a little bit, and I am pretty sure that it does remember the last position - but I am on firmware 2.1.1, and also going by my own memory!
It'll be a week before I'll be back home to try it - but if there are specific operations you want me to try, I'll be happy to do so and report back, so you can judge whether it is worth flashing the beta firmware.
