Sadly, that's true. Knitting is a surprisingly expensive hobby.
And one of the problems is that good wool is actually much easier to knit with than inexpensive acrylics, because it has such natural elasticity. People who have been knitting for a long time tend to have built up a stash (sales, trading with friends, etc.) so we don't notice the prices quite as much.
