Oddly enough, almost EVERY Japanese house has one of
these! Usually it's too big for the kitchen so it's in the eating area or living space, but it's there to hold the dishes. The Japanese use a LOT of dishes during a meal. Often, each item get's its own plate or bowl, the color,
shape, size, and pattern of which are chosen to complement the particular food placed on them. For just the two of us, a typical Japanese dinner might use 8-12 different plates and bowls. No common pattern or theme for them either. As I said, the color and/or pattern on it is chosen for the food to be served. If my wife is serving dinner, it looks like
this. If I'm doing the serving it looks like
this...
