Thanks for all the helpful replies.

I have just checked the user manual and played with all the controls. I can say with certainty that this eReader is either fully on or fully off.

When it goes off, pressing the power button is the only way to start it again. The screen is blank, then for a few seconds a progress bar appears after this a notice is displayed "Loading" and after about 45 second it finally gets to the home screen.

I assume the firmware is a bit basic.

However, as I have said, it has a lot going for it, very light, great screen so I will keep it for a while. I will eventually get fed up with the 55 second delay and buy a replacement (I quite like the look of the new e-ink Nook).
