Some of the css in my books has a huge amount of code related to sizing image and it is all mumbo jumbo. I used to go for the largest cover image I could get so they looked good on my iPad. I hate the idea that I have to have a nook library with the same books as the ipad's library so I can have two different cover images! Is there a way around this? And I did think what was said made sense until I realized how high res my nook color is.

Your problem is your style settings are calling for a 100% width on a narrow source (and forgetting to about aspect ratio)
SVG has elements that allow setting Max-width/or Max-Height and preserve aspect ratio
There are 2 crowds:
1) Fill the screen height and width, no matter how distorted the image gets (the Stretch-o-vision crowd)
2) Preserve the Aspect Ratio above all else, even if it results in "bands" on edges (that's me. I used to buy Laser disc movies because they displayed in the Producers chosen Aspect Ratio.

)
