I have tried bulk renaming tracks to give a clear number in the file name but sometimes that does not work.

There is some free software available that will merge MP3 files so you can have two or three big MP3 files. However, this is only useful if the MP3 player remembers where it got to in the track

As I listen to a lot of audiobooks in my car I now always use an Ipod, either a Classic or a Nano.

This is because I find Playlists are the easy answer to this problem and these devises remember where I got to. Also the older Classic and Nano's have large click wheels so it is easy to use them to pause the audiobook while you are driving. Finally the 4th and 5th generation Ipod Classic contain the Wolfson Audio chip and I am convinced these give a nicer sounding voice that the newer Ipods.
