Game of Thrones is the first book in series called A song of ice and fire. So far, 5 books have been published, the last one a few weeks ago, and two more are planned.
The genre is epic fantasy. The story is set somewhere in an era much like our Middle age. There are lords and knights and kings and queens and free people and servants and slaves.
You follow what happens in one kingdom, events from different parts, different families, different people. Every action requires a reaction and we are reading the end result. This makes it a little bit unusual, because there is no main hero no main bad guy.
Everybody has their own agenda, everybody is led by their values and characteristics and characters you might dislike in the beginning become more understandable as you learn more about what they believe in or fight for. Characters grow and change as events affect them.
It's a little bit complex because of a great number of characters and the way he switches between them. The book is perfect for being made a film or TV show because he writes in scenes, something happens to one character and he switches to show you what's going on with someone else.
So... they did make a show and it was great. It followed to book to the letter. Very very very few things have been cut out or changed. The actors are amazing, the scenery and costumes are awesome.
I always read first then watch later. In this case, it happened to be reversed (the show was being screen for free at the cinema as a part of some festival, so i went and saw it). I didn't mind, it was that good.
