What is the best way to handle the same book in different editions? Say, one has the editions 1, 2 and 3 of a specific book. There is no such a metadata field ...

The field is not the issue (just make a custom column)
You can only have 1 of any FORMAT Type in a Single book Title (record)

You need to make the Author-Title combination, Different (new record. New book folder will be created) to avoid duplicate detection triggering.
