I have read both Child of Fire and The Last Detective and higher recommend both. The product description for Child of Fire is a bit bland, publishers weekly has a better description:

The Last Detective is the 8th in the Elvis Cole series (or 9th if you include Joe Pike books), and I suggest starting at the beginning with The Monkey's Raincoat ($7.99 for Kindle).
