I think that the authors who are building these massive series have figured out that they can make more money by extending the series. I don't buy for a second that GRRM could not have finished this series in a timely fashion and with far fewer books if he wanted to. His publisher and he realized that people will drool over the release of the next book and buy whatever he puts out and so they are milking it.

I have developed more respect for the Jim Butcher's of the world who put out a good product on a regular basis and stick to their deadlines. While Dresden is not as complex as GRRM world it is still a good read and I can rely on the author and the Publisher to get it out on a regular basis. I am comfortable investing in Butcher.

I don't mind gritty. I like gritty. I will probably end up reading the rest of this series but I am not buying any more of his books as long as he is playing games and extending deadlines and the series for something that strikes me as far less than artistic in nature.

More likely then not I will borrow the book from a friend when they are done and not buy it. GRRM hacked me off 5 years ago and has done little to win me back.
