There seems to be a lot of FUD going around here. The current system is not dead yet. The very latest tools still work fine with K4PC up to and including 1.6 (though 1.6 support is very new). There are no guarantees beyond that, however. Everything still works as of right now: K4PC, K4Mac, Stand-alone Kindle books, K4iPhone/Pod/Touch.
In fact, I just tested the tools on K4PC 1.4.1, 1.5 and 1.6. Everything still worked as of 10 minutes ago.
They are making it harder and harder, though. The next version of K4* may just prove too difficult for the current maintainers to overcome, but it hasn't happened yet.
