I've had that happen before although the non-responsiveness seems to be for a shorter period of time for me than you... It seems like it's getting bogged down processing something in the background that's eating up all the CPU time.

1.9.6 actually seems to be better about this to me though, than 1.9.5 was. (I've only used those two fw to any extent as it came OOB w/1.9 which upgraded through the linux desktop app to 1.9.5 as soon as I had gotten it home. Then I did 1.9.6 last week OTA... IIRC...)
