When I was a kid, one of my favorite treats at a picnic was when my grandma would cut off a piece of slab bacon, stick it on the end of a stick and hold it over a wood or charcoal fire until the fat started to melt. She would then blot the charred bacon fat on slices of rye bread (real chewy rye with caraway seeds from a Jewish bakery - not that soft store-bought crap

). Sprinkle a little salt on the bread and yum! Artery-clogging heaven.
