Ok, sounds like I'm going to have to reveal the back-story...I'll give you the shortened version:

The man in question, and a friend, were on a trekking holiday deep in the mountains, and got badly lost. Eventually all their food ran out, and in desperation whilst they waited to be rescued or find their way out again, agreed a pact that to survive they would have to eat one of their arms. The other person would keep both of his arms, so that they remained able to help them both survive.

This was done on the condition that once they reached civilisation again, the person who had retained both arms would have one of his surgically removed and sent to the other as proof that he had kept the pact.

Which brings us back to the postman and his parcel...
