Which store are you trying to connect to? If it is the Entourage store it's not surprising - it closed when Entourage did.
I have no problems with downloading books and apps from other places, either directly to my EE or indirectly via my computer. If you look through the threads you will find many places listed for getting books and apps and, if you are in the US there is the Amazon store available to you.
