There is a valid reason for 'gut feelings.' Wild animals all have that same inner sense to warn them of danger, but as Human animals we've been taught that it's '
just a feeling' or '
just a guess' or just just JUST!!! It isn't 'just.' It's one of your senses, no different from sight, sound, smell, etc., and you need to use it these days. Pay attention to it. Don't disregard it.

Is pepper spray legal where you live? Technically using pepper spray is "assault" against another person, and you can go to jail for it unless you can PROVE that you were justified in using it. Do you think you would actually use it, or would you worry that 'perhaps' you were over reacting? And even if you CAN prove that you were justified and the police don't arrest you, your victim can still sue you in Civil court... "Self Defense" can be a very tricky thing to deal with in court, and every city, state, and country has different laws to deal with it. In many US states, you must physically be in a corner, unable to back away or run, in order to justify the claim of self defense... especially if you use some sort of weapon, chemical or otherwise. If you are carrying pepper spray you are carrying a weapon. Personally, I'm fond of carrying a small plastic spray bottle with some diluted ammonia in it. If I need to use it for defense (and it's just as effective as any pepper spray) I can always say "Gee, I was washing my car windows this morning and forgot it was in my pocket." No 'premeditation' carrying a weapon to be used...
This is why
super loud whistles and air horns are so effective. Besides alerting anyone in the area to look (and perhaps help you) you can't get arrested for using it. And because you can't get arrested, you won't hesitate to use it. Hesitation kills...
Whistles like this can keep you safe and cost less than $3.

Overreacting much?

Knives and stun guns can be fun but unless you have trained with a weapon, do not use it. A knife is a scary tool, but if you have it in your hand, it becomes your ONLY tool. Without training you don't think of all your other tools for defense. Without it you have hands, elbows, knees, feet, teeth, forehead, all of which can be very effective, and can't be taken away from you. When you have a knife in untrained hands, the user forgets to use all the other tools, so when the knife misses its first attack, the bad guy just walks right in.
Stick with a
really loud whistle. Worn on an elastic bracelet on your wrist. The minute you put it into your pocket it's of absolutely NO VALUE to you.
And now I'll get back to my Lipton's Instant Ice Tea!
