You can buy books in Mobi format from lots of places and read them on the Kindle. The only thing you're "locked-in" to Amazon for is DRM'd books such as those from the Agency pubs and I guess for me personally I say so what. Yes I can shop more places for DRM'd books with a Nook or Sony etc., but it's not like it really matters with Agency stuff and on the things that can be discounted Amazon's just as competitive as everywhere else.

Yes, it can be done quite easily most of the time. For DRM'd books it will take the removal of the DRM infection, but if you're willing to do that it can be done in a few seconds once you have the necessary plug-ins or scripts set up.
