The cigarette lighter adapter is 10A-15A max depending on your vehichle so there is no possible way it's drawing 40a. The PE draws 5A and my iPhone draws 1A. Even with my netbook also plugged in, I'm not drawing anywhere near 15A. Max wattage =/= amperage draw, the machine only draws what you ask it for. And 60A alternators went out in the early 90s, most vehicles now come standard with 90A-120A. Now to add my anecdata to that technical information, I've run this machine in a Pontiac Grand Prix, VW Jetta, Lexus SUV and sedan, Honda Odessey, Chevy Colorado, and a couple others I'm sure I'm missing with ZERO dead batteries including driving overnights in the rain, leaving devices on it overnight while the engine was off and charging, and once my daughter tried to use our hand vac on it (which obviously draws more than 15A) and not even a blown fuse, the vacuum just refused to turn on. Now, this particular inverter can be hard-wired to a battery to draw more power than the cigarette receptacle will allow, but there are much smaller ones that only handle up to 15A but I work in the automotive industry and know what I can and can't install on the vehicle so I have my big one that has more flexibility.
