"ADE" books (any ePub) don't have covers. Readers just take the first page and assume it is a cover. This can lead to some really poor looking covers, especially when the ePub doesn't have a cover so much as a title page only, or they didn't use SVG to scale the image correctly in the HTML. Apple and B&N apparently decided that having proper images was a better experience than rendering the first page and hoping it looked okay.

The 1E Nook displays covers for sideloaded books? That's a new one on me. I returned that one because I couldn't get them to how up as anything but a single list that I couldn't even sort the way I wanted to.

Although I will agree it is annoying, since they don't even do anything for PDF files which there's obviously no way to add a separate cover image to.
