Overdrive is safe by all indications. Koland is correct, it's free to you, because it's paid for by the content providers (sometimes, that's you, again, with your library tax dollars....)
However, if you are concerned, you could run Overdrive Media console on a 'sanitized' VM that is only on when you're using it for that purpose.
