This has been done already, more or less; use the sleep function. If you're putting your kobo down for a second, or moving yourself to another room, nudge the power button to go sleep, nudge it again to wake it up. will be at the exact place where you left off in a book, or menu, and it takes less than a second to "lock/unlock" it.

Sure, you can't see where you are at that point and time, but it works in a pinch. If you're looking at something to lock it while you're actually reading, I don't believe any touch device to date has something like that (even the ipad goes to a locked screen...)
