Except I only reboot my Mac every couple of months, and shutting down all my apps makes rebooting a 5 minute procedure. I'm sorry but as a computer programmer I consider this basic laziness on the part of Sony - worse, actually, since the reader doesn't actually need the special kernel driver at all.
