Your pal is very mucky that he didn't get slapped with a charge of disobeying crew member instructions. Moreover, if someone nearby, a nervous flyer to begin with, thinks an accident might result, and they have a fullblown panic attack from it, you (or your pal in this case) will surely be fingered. Not Worth It.
I bring along a take-off and landing book, that also serves for breakfast buffets and such, where I refuse to leave an e-reader on the table, even for a moment (theoretically in sight). If I bring it to a meal, and must excuse myself for ... personal business, the device comes along.
