The farmer rows them across in this sequence:
- first the lamb, leaving the fox and cabbage behind. Leaves the lamb on the other side
- the cabbage, leaving it on the other side and bringing back the lamb
- the fox, leaving the lamb behind and the fox and the cabbage together on the other side
- then he returns to collect the lamb.
