Smashwords is a great place to get a foot in the door of self-publishing. Their style guide has the virtue of being definite about what they want you to do. After spending a year working on a first novel, that kind of support on the production end of things--something I only really thought about once I was finished writing--is very reassuring. One less thing to fret over. And for what it's worth, I have downloaded all my Smashwords books onto my Nook and have not had any problems with formatting.
