If you want to read books that are still DRM "protected" you can do it through Adobe Digital Editions on your computer (then sideload to your eDGe) or by using the Nook app (books can be read either on the e-ink side or on the LCD) or probably several others. I think you can also download directly from bookstores such as Booksonboard or Google.
You can get ebooks from your local library as well, if you're lucky. Those will have to go through either the Overdrive Media Console or Adobe Digital Editions (I think!).
I wish I could be more specific, but I use Calibre for all my books, no matter their source, and then load them onto my eDGes using a wireless LAN transfer.
