I was leaning toward the Sony until I started having issues with my expensive Sony laptop and had to use Sony customer service (fortunately, I bought an extended warranty which included full replacement). I'm STILL annoyed with them, 6 months later, which is too bad, because I've had various Sony laptops for going on 10 years and prior to this I'd never had a problem.

I think the Sony has the better ergonomic design, but not by all that much. I like the Kindle's search capability, with the (admittedly high lag time) QWERTY keyboard.

So, place an order with Amazon, and viola! 5 weeks later (cough) an e-reader. At least they don't charge until they ship, which is some minor customer-service grace, although a bit more feedback on ship times would be good.

The spouse is starting to steal my Kindle, and I'm contemplating a second device for him. It'll probably be another Kindle, just because then we can register them and share libraries, although our reading habits are somewhat diverse.

Now I'm off to see if I can figure out igorsk's mobipocket program. Gah, python again, just when I thought I was out of scripting languages.
