I can recommend "The Extraordinary Adventures of Arsene Lupin, Gentleman-Burglar" written by Maurice Leblanc. You can get that for free at Gutenberg and I assume here at MR too. Arsene Lupin can be considered as a counterpart to Sherlock Holmes, he is a "thief", however he is a gentleman with manner at the same time. Sherlock Holmes even appears in the books, where they are competing against each other.

I JUST found these books here on MR and am already flying through the first one. I LOVE Arsene Lupin, I find him really witty and entertaining. The fact that he announces his burglaries is hilarious to me. Thanks for the heads up!
