I looked through the archives, but didn't find the answer to this question: can you buy Kindle books from Amazon without owning a Kindle? Or is activating a Kindle necessary to buy and download a Kindle ebook to your PC?

Some Kindle books are apparently DRM free, so they should work on other readers that have Mobipocket. Hence my question. Thanks.
