I LOVE, love, love my Kindle. For heavy duty reading (>1hour) I read on the Kindle. Having said that, I LOVE my iPad2 although I definitely don't use it for long term reading.

For me, the backlight after about an hour tires my eyes. Not saying this happens for everyone, but it definitely does for me. My eyes are overly sensitive to light since Lasik. I have heard of people using the iPad as their primary device for reading and having no issues where this is concerned. The other factor that prevents the iPad from being my e-reader is simply its weight. It is a bit too heavy to hold for long stretches of reading. The Kindle on the other hand is very light.

As it has been stated earlier, it is a matter of preference. Good luck with your decision.
