I got interested in the classics by reading Classics Illustrated comics, and if those weren't abridged versions then I don't know what is.

I'm of the some-exposure-to-the-books-is-better-than-no-exposure school of thought, regarding children.

For adults, there's no worthy excuse for reading abridged versions, IMHO.
