If you've ever used an iphone you will understand how great a high-res screen is. And to me, iPad needs to match the quality of the iphone screen, even if it's a much bigger technical challenge to do it on a much bigger screen.
And to the PP: yes, on my old PC I used to turn anti-aliasing off and read with jagged fonts, I preferred it to the "blurry look." Now my macbook has good enough screen that the anti-aliasing doesn't bother me.
