The foundation for all these rumours is a press release put out by LG claiming that it would show an 'ultra' high resolution 9.7" screen at the Display Week 2011 show in LA in May. What did they actually demonstrate? A 10.1" screen running at 150ppi. Such screens are already being used in Android tablets.

Samsung, on the other hand, did actually show a prototype 10.1" display running at 2560x1600. But anyone who follows tech news knows that Samsung and Apple are currently locked in a massive dispute over the 'look-and-feel' of their respective products, and the chances of Samsung allowing Apple access to their cutting-edge technology are negligible unless a far wider deal is agreed. And secondly, this was a prototype, which means it's about a year away from being produced in anything like the quantities needed for the iPad, which sells millions of units each quarter.

The only concrete basis to this persistent rumour is the presence of HD-sized display assets in the iPad firmware. I'm sure Apple is preparing for a high-res display, but the simple fact is that such displays aren't going to be available in the mass quantities needed by Apple for another year at least.
