hmmm, I am a new guy here on MR and definitely don't want to rock the boat. Looking back at the first post on this thread, in all fairness to JSWolf it does say:
"Let us Play Word Association
Increase your vocabulary. I like this simple game of word association. It's an easy game to play, just write down a word that you associate the previous word with.
Example: I write water, you may say cold, the next person may reply, hot.... it's simple. I'll start..."
However...
IMO, rules are meant to be, if not broken outright, then certainly bent, especially for forum threads like this one which are intended to be fun and light-hearted and humorous/friendly and can possibly help us to become better acquainted with each other in this great community known as MR.
I dunno about you folks but I got enough worries with actual rules in real life - I am not necessarily that interested in being so absolutely correct with forum protocols for something like this.
DrDln created this cool thread and we all know stuff like this can easily morph over time - people come, people go, things change, personalities change, yadda, yadda, yadda. Since DrDln is thankfully still active around these here parts and if interested, maybe he/she can weigh in on the matter, settling it for the time being.
All due respect JSWolf, I personally lean towards a more laissez-faire attitude with this. Not talking about someone taking one previous word and consistently submitting phrases. But I see no harm with someone occasionally throwing in multi-word phrases, e.g., off-the-cuff, by-the-book...that kinda thing, provided they are still making valid "associations" with the previous submission. And since MR is global, we could all benefit from interesting colloquialisms and phrases.
I am not suggesting that everyone do this all the time - we should all play as much by the rules for the thread as possible just to keep full blown anarchy at bay. But I also don't think an occasional infraction is so horrible, especially since I am a firm believer that a little anarchy now and again is essential for the soul.

After all, no one really drives at the posted speed limit do they?
my honest 2 cents...
