I would also highly recommend Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael series along with the works of Agatha Christie.

When reading Christie's Poirot stories you should keep in mind that the character ages in real time. I don't think they need to be read in strict order, but understanding the character's aging is important.

Although her canon is much smaller, I would recommend the six Inspector Alan Grant mysteries by Josephine Tey.

The Lord Peter Whimsey books are also good and should be read in order.
