As for it being a hassle, if you don't want to go through this, you could probably just use normal batteries for less than a dollar a month (current Amazon price per AA battery is 42 cents each). However, it's hardly a hassle. A single AA battery lasts me at least two weeks before it starts to noticeably dim. When the battery wears out, I can just pop it in the charger, and put the spare battery in the light.

The only time I use the lighted cover is when I travel or when I actually need the light. If I'm reading in the light, I take off the cover and use the Kindle naked.
I'm glad you like your light. But for me, I prefer the lighted cover.
