I was always under the impression that English shoes were of the finest quality... (Not counting the Tessco sorts in that.) Have you considered custom made shoes? There is a German Shoemeister in Kobe (about 70km from me) that makes the foot bed orthotic and builds the shoe around that. Cost is about the price of three normal pair but the comfort and durability almost make it worthwhile!
