Positive fan mail -- After I manage to claw my way down from Cloud 9, I'll respond with honest enthusiasm. If someone's letter totally made my day, I tell them that.
Negative fan mail -- Um. Hm. I haven't gotten any yet. I must not be writing on topics that are inflammatory enough. I suspect that, with angry-and-I-hate-you-now mail, I would reply with a brief message thanking the reader for his or her thoughts. With I'm-so-disappointed-because-I-love-your-stuff-and-this-wasn't-up-to-snuff mail, I'd respond in more detail.
