I know we should trust you but just for fun...

What version number of calibre are you using?
What OS are you running?

If using Linux
Are you using a repository version of calibre?
Are you installing via the binary install instructions on this page?

Have you restarted calibre (ctrl Q or ctrl R)?
Have you rebooted your computer?

If you haven't already, run calibre in debug mode drop down arrow next to preferences (ctrl-shift-r). Once in debug mode recreate the steps that cause the error (hopefully less then 100 conversions will work) and post the results.

Hopefully with this info someone can help explain what is going on.

The previous two users solved it by restarting calibre.
