Correct. The attendants put out the general rule that any device with an on/off button has to be turned off (no, I didn't point out that my iPhone doesn't actually have an on/off button*). I'd guess that any reader has a button with the same general function and thus would be expected to be turned off.
In retrospect, over the six hops I had to recently suffer through (three each way), no attendant ever mentioned that phones used during flight (when electronics are allowed) have to be in airplane mode. Either they've determined that airplane mode is pointless, or they've decided that we all know by now. I'm voting for the former.
* For those out of the know, it's a sleep/wake button. I rarely actually turn my iPhone off, and it seems that I have yet to bring a plane down. Attendants have watched me just put it to sleep, and they seem to be happy enough with that.
